Berlin, Massachusetts
Worcester county. Taken from Bolton in 1784. Population, 1837, 724. It lies 15 miles N.E. from Worcester, 31 W. by N. from Boston, and 7 S.E. from Lancaster. A branch of the Assabet affords this town good water privileges. Large quantities of hops are produced here; some wool, and some baskets.

Berlin was taken in part from Marlborough, but chiefly from Bolton.

Berlin is entirely agricultural, and one of its chief products is Hops.

1848 - Berlin
This town was taken chiefly from Bolton, and a small part of it from Marlborough. It was made a parish by the general court in 1778, and in 1784 was incorporated a district by the name of Berlin. Here a church was formed in 1779, and in 1781 Rev. Reuben Puffer, D. D., was ordained pastor; he died in 1829, and was succeeded by Rev. Robert F. Walcut, in 1830. The next pastor, Rev. David Lamson, was settled in 1834. The first minister of the second church was Rev. Abram C. Baldwin, who was settled in 1830; his successors have been Rev. Michael Burdett and Rev. Eber S. Clark.

The most valuable uplands in this town lie on several hills, which are excellent for grazing, and a suitable proportion of it for tillage. The range extends north into Bolton, and south into Northborough. There is one pond in the east part of the place, called Gates’ Pond, 1 mile in length by half a mile in width, which abounds in fish. Berlin is one of those steady, quiet, farming towns whose people own the estates they occupy, and live independently and without fear of molestation. It lies in the easterly section of Worcester County, 40 miles northwest of Boston. On the north is Bolton, on the east Hudson and Marlborough ; Northboro is on the south, and Boylston and Clinton on the west. Beside highways and water surfaces, its area is 7,627 acres, — of which 2,596 acres are woodland. The forest consists of oak, walnut, maple, pine and chestnut. Along the highways also are numerous, well-grown maples and elms.

A good iron bridge spans the Assabet River, which runs through the southeastern angle of the town. An affluent of this river is North Brook, which, with its tributaries, drains the central part of the town. Grant Pond, in the eastern part — about one mile in length by one half mile in width — is well stored with fish. The land is uneven, but without high hills ; the largest being Barne's Hill in the...
