Plympton, Plymouth, MA

Plympton was first settled in 1662 as the western parish of Plymouth. Lands of the original town included all of Carver and Halifax, as well as small portions of Kingston and Middleborough. The town was officially incorporated in 1707 and named for Plympton, Devon, England. In 1734, the town of Halifax separated and incorporated, and Carver did the same in 1790. The current boundaries of the town were set in 1862.

Plymouth county. This town is watered by a branch of Taunton river. It lies 32 miles S.E. by S. from Boston and 8 W. from Plymouth. Incorporated, 1707. Population, 1837, 835. The manufactures of the town consist of cotton and woolen goods, nails, shovels, spades, hoes, forks, hoop rivets, shoes, leather, palm-leaf hats, chairs and cabinet ware; annual amount about $100,000. The Indian name of Plympton was Wanatuxet.

A noble white oak was cut in this town a few years ago. It contained seven tons and seven feet of ship timber, and two cords of fire wood.

Plympton was originally the northwestern parish of Plymouth, and contained what is now the town of Carver, and the southern portion of Halifax.

The town has a few manufactories of wood and iron ; and a h anch of Taunton River gives it some rich meadow land.

Plympton is a farming town situated in the central part of Plymouth County, about 30 miles southeast of Boston; and has as boundaries Kingston on the northeast, Carver on the south, Middleborough on the southwest and Halifax on the northwest. The assessed area is 8,407 acres.

Plympton, the post-office and central village, is pleasantly situated on a commanding eminence; and Winetuxet village is upon a beautiful stream of the same name; which with its affluents flows through the southerly part of the town, and thence through Halifax into the Taunton River. The Plymouth Branch of the Old Colony Railroad has its Plympton station at the north village called "Silver Lake," situated on Jones River Pond. Silver Lake Grove, comprising nearly 30 acres of wooded land, on the border of the pond has been admirably fitted up for pleasure parties. South Plympton is the other village.
