The two-story brick building was erected in 1896 to house Charles D. Sanford Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Civil War veterans. According to a history of North Adam and vicinity published by the Transcript in 1898, ‘no G.A.R. post in the state had prouder quarters’.
