The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. In 1963, on November 22, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. The assassination shocked the nation and the world, leading to widespread mourning and a period of intense national introspection. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States shortly after Kennedy's death. Rita I. (St. Jean) Hart, age 89, of Worcester, died Friday, October 25, 2013 at Life Care Center of Auburn.

Her husband, John Hart died in 1972. She leaves two daughters, Sheila A. Smith of Auburn and Sharon A. Bienvenue of Green Cove Springs, FL; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Lessard and Leona Vanderwater, both of Charlotte, NC.

Rita was born in Fall River, MA, daughter of the late Joseph and Marion (Dunn) St. Jean. She lived in Fall River prior to moving to Worcester. She was a Special Education Teacher within the Fall River School Department, and later worked as an Inspector at United Mercant in Fall River.
