Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Gerrish Monroe Severson, 94, formerly of Forest City and Huxley, IA passed away on Monday, November 22, 2004 at The Village Health Care Center in Indianola.

Memorial services were held Friday, November 26 at The Village Centre Lounge in Indianola with visitation there one half hour prior to services. Burial was in the Bethleham Cemetery in Slater, IA.

Gerrish was born October 6, 1910 in Blairsburg, IA, the son of GEORGE and MINNIE (Larson) Severson and married ELSIE Mae Olson on May 15, 1937 in Slater. He earned his undergraduate Degree, Masters and PhD from Iowa State University and retired from Waldorf College in Forest City as Dean of Instruction.

Gerrish is survived by his very devoted wife ELSIE; son GARY (Linda) Severson of Bloomington, IL; two brothers, Dr. WAYNE (Maxine) Severson of West Des Moines, and GEORGE J. (Mary) Severson of Iowa Falls; and 2 grandsons, DAVID and STEVEN Anderson of California. He was preceded
