The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Gustavia Cheramie Plaisance, 72, a native of Westwego and resident of Cut Off, died at 8:58 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2007.A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Cheramie Cemetery in Galliano.She is survived by five sons, Augustin Plaisance Jr., Johnny Plaisance, Ronald Plaisance, Donald Plaisance and Arnold Plaisance; one daughter, Arlene Guidry; one sister, Rosita 'Rose' LePine; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, Augustin Philip Plaisance Sr.; her parents, Lester Joseph Sr. and Emma Hodge Cheramie; four brothers, Lester Jr., Jackolyn, Curtis and Aujest Cheramie; and four sisters, Marie Falgout, Lordia Falgout, Ella Guidry and Serita Comardelle.

She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.Samart-Mothe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
