Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.
News1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. Sally Buxton Scales

1937 - 2016 Sally (Joan) Buxton Scales, 79, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016. Born on May 27, 1937, in Bellows Falls, VT, she was daughter to the late Alvah and Zoay Buxton. Sally grew up in Bellows Falls & Saxtons River area, attended local schools and graduated from Bellows Falls HS in 1955. After graduation Sally attended UVM and earned a BA in 1959. She married Ron Scales, in 1960 and became the prototypical Army Wife as they fulfilled 20 years of service in Germany, Alaska, multiple States, and through his tours in Vietnam. She spent hours with various volunteer groups, and kid events during these years. Later, Sally worked 21 years in military Contracting Offices in NC and in Okinawa. Sally and Ron retired to Florida in 1998. Sally enjoyed music, playing bridge, cats, traveling, and genealogy. She is also a long standing member of Order of Eastern Star (Alpha Chapter #53).
