The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' A well known area rancher and member of one of Wickenburg's oldest and largest families, William 'Jr.' Hershkowitz, 62, died of a heart attack in Wenden last Saturday.

Born March 19, 1924, Hershkowitz was a second generation Arizonan, born and raised in Congress.

His grandfather settled in Congress at the turn of the century after migrating to the United States from Eastern Europe and opened a general store in the thriving mining community.

The family interests were expanded into ranching by Hershkowitz's father, William Sr. and carried on by his sons, Jr. and George.
Hershkowitz also worked at the Congress Gold Mine and during World War II served in the U.S. army.

In 1950 he and his family relocated in Wickenburg where in 1954 he met and Married Dolores Temerowski, who was visiting from Detroit, Mich.
