The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' In 1963, on November 22, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. STURBRIDGE - Charlotte M. (Korch) Armstrong, 69, of 12 Summit Ave., Fiskdale, died yesterday in her home.

Her husband, the late Eugene E. Armstrong, died in 1983. She leaves two daughters, Patricia Talbot of Southbridge and Louise Gauthier of Sturbridge two brothers, Harold Korch of Putnam, Conn., and Donald Korch of North Grosvernordale, Conn. five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was born in Webster, a daughter of George and Mae (Ostberg) Korch, and lived in Fiskdale most of her life.
Mrs. Armstrong was a past president of the Champoux-Vilandre Post No. 109, American Legion Auxiliary and was active on the committee for Girls State.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, with Rev. Ernest T. Berkeley officiating. Burial will be in North Cemetery, Sturbridge. Calling hours are at the funeral home are from ...Read full story
