Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

DUDLEY – Stephen F. Plaza, Sr., 96, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at home after an illness.
He leaves his wife of almost 70 years, Jayne O. (Korch) Plaza; 3 children, Bette J. Plaza of St. Albans , ME, Joseph E. Plaza and his wife Marietta of Hampton, NH, and Shirley A. Wagner and her husband David of Epsom, NH; a sister, Helen Burt of Webster; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen F. Plaza, Jr. in 2003, by 3 brothers, Stanley, Frank and John Plaza, and by 4 sisters, Mary Dyson, Anna Barrette, Catherine Lindburg and Stella Pelletier.

He was born in Webster, the youngest of the 9 children of Joseph and Margaret (Duszlak) Plaza, and lived in Dudley all his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Plaza owned and operated Webster Machine Products, Inc. for over 30 years before retiring in 1978.

He was a member of Saint Andrew Bobola Church. He served as the first
