Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

FITCHBURG -- Elsie (Johnson) Walsh, 94, died August 2nd in the Apple Valley Center Ayer
Elsie was born in Fitchburg on March 12, 1916 daughter of Carl H. and Hulda (Nilsson) Johnson. She was a graduate of Fitchburg High School class of 1934 and retired from Fitchburg State College, where she had worked as a student loan clerk. Through the years she had worked for Iver Johnson Co, Hedstrom Union Co., Workers Credit Union and the F.L. Drury Co. She was a lifelong member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Fitchburg.

Her husband Phillip D. Walsh died in 1967. She is survived by her son, Terrence M. Walsh of Port Charlotte FL, her sister Helen Foley of Leominster, two grandchildren; Jennifer Nathan of Denver CO and Jonathan Walsh of New Orleans LA. and three great-grandchildren; Emma and Caroline Nathan and Haylie Walsh. She was predeceased by her daughter Maureen Rogers who died in 2006.
