The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

SOUTHBRIDGE -- The funeral Mass for W. Laurier Pinsonneault, 86, of Pine Street, who died Wednesday, May 30, in Providence House Nursing Home, was held Saturday, June 23, in Notre Dame Church.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Doris G. (Durocher) Pinsonneault; two daughters, Louise Guillet of Dudley and Susan Maher of Chittenango, N.Y.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Lillia Renaud and Rubia Durocher, both of Southbridge, predeceased him. A son, Paul Pinsonneault, died in 1967.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Asia and the Pacific.
Mr. Pinsonneault worked 25 years at Hyde Manufacturing Co., and was a barber many years at Leo's Barbershop in Southbridge. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6055 and the Disabled American Veterans.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Notre Dame Restoration Fund, 61 Marcy St.,
