Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

Obituary
WEBSTER - Ernest Z. Collette, 77, of Union Point Road, formerly of Southbridge, died yesterday in his home after an illness.

He leaves his wife, Josephine {Swana} Vajcovec Collette; two sons, Richard Collette of Naples, Fla., and Donald Collette of Port Charlotte, Fla.; four stepsons, Paul Vajcovec of Palo Alto, Calif., Andrew Vajcovec of Webster, David Vajcovec of Duxbury, and Robert Vajcovec of Taunton; and 12 grandchildren. He was born in Southbridge, son of Freeman and Ida {Renaud} Collette, and lived here 16 years.

He was a foreman at the former American Steel & Wire Division, U.S. Steel Corp., Worcester. He worked there for 37 years until it closed in 1971. He then worked at American Optical Corp. in Southbridge for seven years before he retired.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Collette was a member of St. Louis Church here; Leonide J. Lemire Post 655, Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Southbridge; and Southbridge Post, American Legion.
