BÉDARD - Familiar, affectionate nickname for the paunchy one, with a belly. Also, from the root bed- (fool, silly). For some, a variation of the surname Bedat (someone who comes from said place). Other known spellings or variants: BEDAR, BEDAT. Isaac Bédard was born around 1616 in La Rochelle, in Aunis (Charente-Maritime). Son of Jacques Bédard and Marie Guérineau, he married Marie Girard at the Calvinist Temple of La Rochelle on March 20, 1644. Seven children were born from this union but only 3 survived. He is a carpenter of large works. He was in New France in 1661 and settled in the seigniory of Notre-Dame-des-Anges (Charlesbourg). After being beaten by his neighbor, he sells his land and goes to settle in Petite-Auvergne (Charlesbourg). In 1667, he owns 3 cattle and 3 acres of cultivated land. He died in Charlesbourg on January 14, 1689.
