LEDUC - agglutination of 'the Duke', an ironic nickname given to the person who is reproached for giving himself a haughty and superior air, like the Grand Duke, the bird of prey.
Jean Leduc was born around 1622 in St-Martin d'Igé, Orne, Normandy. Son of Jean Leduc and Cécile Lechaperon, he married Marie Soulinier-Souligny, daughter of Élie and Marie Foulet, on November 11, 1652 in Montreal. The couple have 9 children. Arriving in 1644, this pitsawyer was one of the first pioneers in Montreal. In 1681, he owned 1 gun, 12 cattle and 50 acres of land. Thanks to its many lands, it provides wheat to several bakers. A pious man who had also been a churchwarden, he left money to the Récollets to have masses sung for him and his wife. He died on April 18, 1702 and was buried the next day in Montreal.
