The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

GRAMERCY – Odelia Duhe Louque, 87, a native of Lutcher and lifelong resident of the Lutcher/ Gramercy area, died Dec. 6. She was the wife of the late Numa “Tip” Louque and mother of Warren “Potsey” and Douglas Louque. She was the daughter of the late Claude and Electa Duhe; sister of Doris Kollman, Electa Copponex, Elua Gagliano, Gertie Millet, Julia Sanchez, Betty Oswald and Kenneth, Milton and the late Kramer, Norman, Lester, Allen and Claude “C.J.” Duhe; and stepsister of Alice Copponex. She is also survived by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services were Dec. 10 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Gramercy, with interment at St. Joseph Mausoleum, Paulina.
