Harper Lee, born Nelle Harper Lee on April 28, 1926, was an American novelist widely known for her groundbreaking work, 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' She hailed from Monroeville, Alabama, a small town that would later serve as the inspiration for the fictional Maycomb in her iconic novel.
Lee was the youngest of four children in her family. Her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, was a lawyer and served as the model for the character of Atticus Finch in 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' Harper Lee's mother, Frances Cunningham Finch Lee, was a homemaker. Growing up, Lee developed a close friendship with her neighbor, Truman Capote, who would become a celebrated author himself.
In 1944, Harper Lee enrolled at the University of Alabama, where she studied law. However, her true passion lay in writing, and she eventually left law school to pursue a career as a writer in New York City. In the 1950s, Lee worked as an airline reservation clerk while dedicating her spare time to her writing.
