Barbara Bush, born Barbara Pierce on June 8, 1925, was an American First Lady, known for her wit, no-nonsense attitude, and dedication to family and public service. She was the wife of the 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, and the mother of the 43rd President, George W. Bush. Barbara's life was marked by her strong character, commitment to literacy, and her role as a matriarch in one of America's political dynasties.
Barbara grew up in Rye, New York, in a well-to-do family. Her father, Marvin Pierce, was the publisher of McCall's magazine. She attended the prestigious Ashley Hall boarding school in Charleston, South Carolina, where she developed a reputation for her sharp wit and keen sense of humor. It was during a school Christmas dance in 1941 that she first met George H. W. Bush, a senior at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.
