What is a "dit/dite" Name?

When the first settlers came to Québec from France, it was a custom to add a "dit" nickname to the surname. The English translation of "dit" is "said." Colonists of Nouvelle France used dit names as distinguishers. A settler might use one to differentiate a branch of the family from siblings, sometimes choosing a name connected with the place to which the family had relocated.

A dit name could also result from a casual adoption or from honoring the family that had raised someone. In other cases it identified the town or village in France from which the person originated. The custom ended around 1900, when people increasingly used only one name, either the dit nickname or the original surname.

Biography
PICARD - nickname given to someone who is from Picardy, a former province in northern France. They were nicknamed by this name when they arrived in Canada a long time ago. They were 18 siblings. We can also find the ''Picard-des-trois-maison''. In Picardy, there were 3 houses for Picardians and thus, there were two lines of the Picard family.

Hugues Picard-Lafortune was born around 1627 in St-Colombin-en-Marche, Loire-Atlantique, France. Son of Gabriel Picard and Michelle Clavier, he married the widow of Blaise Juillet, Anne-Antoinette de Liercourt, daughter of Philippe and Jeanne Patin, on June 30, 1660 in Montreal. The couple have 5 children. This sawyer arrived in Canada in 1653 aboard the Saint-Nicolas, settled in Montreal, then settled in Sault St-Louis. He testified several times for different causes, including one for theft from the king's store. In 1681, he owns 1 gun, 9 cattle and 30 acres of land. He died in Montreal and was buried there on December 22, 1707.
