The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Danvers — Mrs. June E. (MacDonald) (McCloskey) Connolly, 97, of Danvers, beloved wife of the late Thomas J. Connolly and the late Lores W. McCloskey, died Saturday morning, January 19th, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Gloucester.
Born in Boston, She was the daughter of the late Angus and Effie (Jewell-Williams) MacDonald. She was raised and educated in Gloucester and was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1934.
Mrs. Connolly had been employed as a bookkeeper at the Museum of Science and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for many years. More recently she had been employed at Bostik of Middleton in the Accounting Department until the time of her retirement.
A longtime resident of the Town of Danvers, June was a longtime member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Danvers. She was a member of the Danvers Art Association, the Middleton Art Association, the North Shore Art Association and the Danvers Council on Aging. She was a past President of the Maplewood Parent
