1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

Lydia A. Decoteau-Boynton, 42, of 97 North Summer St. died Saturday evening at home. Born in Pittsfield on July 1, 1958, daughter of Richard B. Boynton of Orlando, Fla., and the late Jean Horn Boynton, she attended Adams schools and graduated from Hoosac Valley High School in 1976. She also graduated from Berkshire Community College with an associate's degree in human services in 1978, and from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1980. At the time of her death, Mrs. Decoteau-Boynton was employed by J.A.L. Management Properties Inc. as the leasing/ marketing administrator and social services coordinator. She was a certified occupancy specialist through the National Center for Housing Management, a certified resident service coordinator with the Massachusetts Association of Resident Service Coordinators in Housing Inc., and a certified reverse mortgage housing counselor with the Hous-ing and Urban Development...Read MORE...
