Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

News1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

'Bonanza' creator doesn’t want developers to get Ponderosa Ranch
By Jack Carrerow
Tribune News Service

INCLINE VILLAGE - The impending deal to sell the 548-acre Ponderosa Ranch to a consortium of government agencies has generated shock and surprise from people all across the country.

The ranch, which was built by longtime Incline Village resident Bill Anderson in 1968, is based on the setting of the popular TV Western 'Bonanza,' which ran from 1959 to 1973.

While few scenes from the show were shot at the ranch itself, the producers made good use of the surrounding property, featuring Lake Tahoe as its centerpiece.

David Dortort, the man who created 'Bonanza' in 1959, said that the idea to shoot locations at Tahoe was essential to his vision.

'This was to be the first show shot in color and I couldn't think of a more beautiful place than Tahoe,' Dortort said. 'I think the show spread the message of how beautiful Lake Tahoe is to the rest of the world.'

Asked how he feels about the deal to sell the ranch, Dortort, who lives in...Read MORE...

At age sixteen, he and his brother, Chris, opened a wrecking yard in San Lorenzo, CA, known as Anderson Brothers. Mr. Anderson was a Parachute Trooper with the Eleventh Airborne in World War II. After the war, he became heavily involved in his military surplus and heavy equipment business (also named Anderson Brothers) in San Lorenzo, CA. In the early 1960's, he moved his operation to North Lake Tahoe, NV to supply heavy equipment for the development of Incline Village. FROM TIMES STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

William Anderson, 84, former owner of the Ponderosa Ranch western-themed tourist attraction on Lake Tahoe’s north shore, died June 4 at his ranch house in Dayton, Nev., his family said.

Anderson opened the Incline Village park in 1968 and was its owner and president for more than 30 years.

It was the fictional home of the Cartwright family on NBC's 'Bonanza' television show, starring Lorne Greene, Michael Landon and Dan Blocker. The show's 428 episodes ran from 1959 to 1973.

Among other attractions, the park featured a replica of the Cartwright house and barn, a wax figure of Ben Cartwright, wagon rides, gold panning and food such as 'Hoss' burgers.

The park closed in 2004 after the land was sold to high-tech billionaire David Duffield.

Born in Alhambra in 1923, Anderson opened a wrecking yard in San Lorenzo, near Oakland, at age 16 before becoming a paratrooper during...Read MORE...
