1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

FITCHBURG -- Gerard J. 'Jerry' LeBlanc, 80, of 64 Exeter St., died Thursday, Feb. 28, at HealthAlliance Hospital/ Leominster after a short illness.

Mr. LeBlanc was born in Fitchburg, April 21, 1927, a son of the late Hilaire and Alma (LeBlanc) LeBlanc and lived his entire life in Fitchburg.

Mr. LeBlanc was employed for 30 years at the former Fitchburg Yarn as a traffic manager. He was then employed for the City of Fitchburg for 10 years with the Parks Department. Mr. LeBlanc served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. LeBlanc was the former treasurer for the Fitchburg Retired Municipal Employees Association. He was also a former member of the St. Joseph Club. Mr. LeBlanc was an avid Red Sox fan and also enjoyed bowling.

Mr. LeBlanc was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church in Fitchburg.

Mr. LeBlanc is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jeannette M. (LeBlanc) LeBlanc; two sons and daughters-in-law, David G. and Lois LeBlanc of Westminster, and Brian E. and...Read MORE...
