On May 2, 1644, young laborer Jean Doyon was about 25 years old and living in the town of Esnandes, nearby La Rochelle, when he presented himself at the home of the notary Teuleron. He was accompanied by the merchant Pierre Prevost, agent for Pierre Legardeaur de Repentignay. He singed an indenture to work for the latter for three years at a salary of 60 livres a year. "While there (in France with his parents), he became engaged to Vincente Gaulthier who had an enfant naturelle about 1636 named Marthe. Mathurin acknowledged his parentage and brought Marthe with him to Canada, where she married Jean Doyen in 1650."
