Stephen Gary was a early inhabitant of Charlestown, the year of his arrival has not been ascertained. He was born about 1650 or 1651, as he deposed in court in 1679 and gave his age as about 28 and again in 1690, when with uniform consistency, he stated his age as about 38. In early life he was a servant to the Hon. Richard Russell of Charlestown and it is evident that at a still earlier date he had been indentured to Capt. Richard Sprague (1605-1668), also of Charlestown, who mentions him in his will of 1668, Stephen Gary, my servant by indenture, whose time is not expired.: In one early record he is styled "Stephen Gary, bellman." He married first, in Charlestown, Aug. 14, 1673, Mary Manuell, probably a sister of John Manuell of Charlestown. After her death he married Patience ?. Very little of the details of his life are obtainable. His will was proved Jan. 16, 1691 or 1692 and in this instrument he mentions his wife Patience, "now with child." The inventory of his estate amounted to 76 pounds. This amount was shown in the inventory presented to Patience Gary, "Relict Widow of Stephen Gary, late of Charlestown, deceased," in Volume 6, page 141 of the Miscellaneous Records of the Middlesex (County) Probate Court.
