The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. SOUTHBRIDGE - Charles E. Desmarais, 82, of Plimpton Street, died yesterday in Harrington Memorial Hospital after being stricken ill at home.
He leaves his wife of 48 years, Irene (Gamache) Desmarais nieces and nephews. He was born in Oxford, son of Telesphore and Emelia (Gevry) Desmarais, and lived in Southbridge most of his life.
Mr. Desmarais worked for American Optical for more than 48 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of Notre Dame Church and the American Optical Quarter Century Club.
The funeral will be held Monday from Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame Church, 456 Main St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Notre Dame Church Restoration Fund, 61 Marcy St., Southbridge 01550.
