1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Jeannette Korch Sept. 23, 1929-August 20, 2013 Putnam- Jeannette Korch - age 83, of Putnam, died August 20, 2013 at Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge Drive, Augusta, ME after an extended illness. She was born in Putnam, CT, on Sept. 23, 1929 the daughter of Hector Collette and Dora (Bonosconi) Collette. She was educated in Putnam, graduating from Putnam High School. Mrs. Korch was employed by American Optical for many years. She had a youthful personality and loved camping, watching the cooking channel and listening to her radio with her cat, Sammy, on her lap. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting and sewing. Mrs. Korch and her husband loved vacationing to Maine to visit her great nieces and great nephews and their sons. Jeannette was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary Church, Putnam, CT, and a member of St. Mary Circle Daughters of Isabella. A special thanks to the girls that cared for Jeannette at home.
