"Chosen moderator of the first meeting under the charter for the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and then at the same meeting elected president, May 1647." (From Great Migration Begins) He was buried on his own land in Newport, where his descendants have erected a monument to his memory, and enclosed the little family burial ground with a neat and substantial stone wall. It is situated on Coggeshall Avenue, near Victoria Avenue.
