1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' SYLVANIA, Ga. - Benjamin Ed Youmans, 84, of Sylvania, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001, at Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville. A native of Post Royal, S.C. he was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and received the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He was a retired services station operator. Mr. Youmans was preceded in death by a daughter, Paulette Irene Bolton. Survivors include daughter, Jean C. Williams, Sylvania; sons, Ricky A. Youmans, Sylvania, Benjamin C. Youmans, Zephyrhills, Fla., Robert E. Youmans, Orlando, Fla., John Wesley Youmans Beech Island, S.C.; brother, John Wesley Youmans, Jr., Burlington, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2001, at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home chapel with Ben Youmans officiating. Burial in Screven County Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday. Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home of Sylvania.
