"A happy couple lived on the Beaupre Coast at what is now L'Ange-Gardien. They were Rene Maheu and Jeanne Garnier, married at Quebec on 30 July 1657. Rene, baptized on 2 July 1632 at St-Langis-le-Mortagne, was the son of Zacharie Maheu dit Point-du-Jour and Leonarde Foucquest. The bride Jeanne Garner, daughter of Sebastien and of Marie Roux, was born at Saint-Denis, Ile d'Oleron, arrondissement of Rocherfort, diocese of La Rochelle, in Sainteonge, today la Charente-Maritime. This twenty-one-year old girl had contracted for Canada on 10 April 1657. She was a strong and courageous woman. Rene and Jeanne had their only son Rene baptized at Quebec on 10 June 1658, by the Sulpicien Gabriel de Queylus. Alas! Jeanne Garnier's husband died before the spring of 1659."
