Obituary

Paul was born August 26, 1934, in Arcata, CA, the third child of Ruth Maude O'Kelly Clary, a teacher and Paul Dennis Clary, Jr., a chemist. The family lived in numerous cities in California and in Appleton, WI. In 1947, Paul's father was transferred to Petaluma and was responsible for developing what later became known as Carnation Instant Milk. In high school, Paul bought and learned to fly a plane, fixed up and drove a Model A Ford, and held a number of jobs, including helping his Dad in the dairy lab. Paul played football, serving as Team Captain and was MVP his senior year. After graduation, he attended UC Davis studying animal husbandry. He then joined the Army, and trained as a Radar Repairman. On 8/ 19/ 56, Paul married the love of his life, Alice Anne Klare of Placerville, CA. He attended SRJC, and they had their first daughter, Christie. Later he was accepted into Veterinary School at UC Davis and Paul IV and Carolyn were born. After graduation, Colleen arrived. They purchased Balboa Pet Hospital in San Francisco from his mentors, Drs. Freid and Chafets. Paul was an adventurer: a licensed pilot, flying since age 15 and proud owner of a 1947 Aeronca Champion, motorcyclist and certified scuba diver. The family took summer vacations; camping, backpacking, and exploring National Parks, etc. This family tradition continues. He loved Ireland, tracing his family roots in Co. Kerry. He loved to work on the Klare Family ranch in Somerset, CA. He planted an orchard, built a cabin then later a home on his and Alice's piece of the property. He loved to be up there, on his tractor, ATV, and working the ranch. He was a generous, hardworking, brave, faithful man, admired and adored by all. He loved to laugh and play with his grandchildren. He survived polio as a child. His heart disease began at age 43 but he never gave up his quest to live. Most recently a Left Ventricular Assist Device was placed in early 2010. He was grateful for the additional time. He died unexpectedly on 3/ 17/ 11, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Alice; children: Christie, Paul, Carolyn (David Macy) and Colleen; grandchildren: Alanna (fiancé Patrick Wheatley), Shannon, Darci, Mathew Luce; Patrick, Liana, Christopher, Olivia Clary; Xavier, Drew, Violet Macy; Ben, Kyra, David Swerrie, Marcos Herrera; great-grandchildren: Lauro and Layla Moura. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother David. He is also survived by his two sisters, Ruth Anne Carter and Beverly Burger, many nieces and nephews and the large extended Clary-Temple families of Santa Rosa. The family would like acknowledge the exceptional care given by Dr. David Sperling, Paul's longtime physician and friend, and the LVAD team at CPMC. A huge hole has been left in the world with his departing and we know his love lives on in all of us. TTFN. We will be together again and look forward to Paul's embrace.
