Obituary
Butler Skip Pratt Jr., 82
PORTLAND -- Butler Hillman Pratt, Jr., 82, of Falmouth died Sunday afternoon Aug. 5, 2007, after a brief illness. His family was by his side.
Skip was born on Aug. 6, 1924, in Portland, the son of Wilma (Jones) and Butler Hillman Pratt. He graduated from Falmouth High School and attended Maine Maritime Academy and served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. After the war, Skip enlisted in the Maine Army National Guard and made it a career. His excellence as a marksman was well known and he competed at the national level representing The Guard and as a member of The Maine Rifle Team.
On April 8, 1950, Skip had the good fortune to marry Esther P. Howe and together they had four children. In his off hours Skip liked to target shoot, play golf, woodworking, and in later years go RVing with Esther, visiting 43 of the States and parts of Canada. He also loved to read, especially history books, and to take classes on things nautical. Skip will be remembered as a patriotic and strong willed man who could speak directly and even be outspoken for what he truly believed in and firmly thought it was everyone's right to say his piece. And yet, underneath this strong man was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who believed that actions spoke louder than words.
Skip is survived by his wife of 57 years, Esther Pratt of Falmouth; his daughter, Cheryl Pothoven and her husband Dennis of Seattle, Wash.; his sons David Pratt of Jasper, Fla., and Brian Pratt of Falmouth; his daughter, Michelle Fox and her husband Lenny of Harrison; and nine grandchildren, Kate, Chelsea, Nicole, Colby, Jess, Steve, Starr, Chris and Meredith.
There will be a graveside service on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007, at 11 a.m., at Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 88, Falmouth, with the Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Everyone is invited to join the family for a luncheon celebrating Skip's life, at Mrs. Pratt's home. The Pratt Family has created a memorial of Skip's life and it is available at www.mem.com. Please visit Skip's memorial and share your condolences, memories and wishes with the Pratt Family. Arrangements are under the care of Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
