Biography



"LAFONTAINE - Nom de guerre. Nickname given to a soldier upon his arrival in the regiment. The nickname was then passed on to descendants. Is said of someone who lives near a fountain, or who is from a locality or a hamlet bearing this name. Known variants: FONTAINE, DE LAFONTAINE, PREFONTAINE, BELLEFONTAINE, FUENTES, LAFOND, BELFONT. Nicolas Gendron-Lafontaine was born around 1634 in La Rochelle, France. Son of Pierre Gendron and Marie Renaud, he married Marie-Marthe Hubert, daughter of Toussaint and Catherine Champagne, on February 14, 1656 in Quebec. From this union were born 6 children. This butcher first settled in Quebec, then in Sainte-Famille, Île d'Orléans. The rape of his wife by an Amerindian, in 1664, is at the origin of a decision of the Sovereign Council, which stipulates that from this day on, Amerindians who commit crimes will be subject to the same penalties as the French. He died on January 16, 1671 in Sainte-Famille."
