Biography
Gerty Cori, born Gerty Theresa Radnitz on August 15, 1896, was a pioneering biochemist who made significant contributions to our understanding of carbohydrate metabolism. She was a trailblazer in her field and, along with her husband Carl Cori, shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1947, becoming the first woman to win the award in that category.
Gerty Cori was born in Prague, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now the Czech Republic. Her family was Jewish, and her father was a chemist. Growing up, Gerty was a precocious and intellectually curious child. She excelled in her studies, particularly in science, and was determined to pursue a career in research.
In 1914, Gerty entered the German University in Prague, where she studied medicine. However, her education was interrupted by World War I. During the war, she served as a volunteer nurse and X-ray technician. After the war, she resumed her medical studies at the University of Prague, earning her M.D. in 1920.
In 1922, Gerty married Carl Ferdinand Cori, a fellow biochemist she had met during her studies. The couple decided to pursue their research together and emigrated to the United States in 1922. They both joined the laboratory of biochemist Carl Neuberg at the State Institute for the Study of Malignant Diseases in Buffalo, New York.
The Coris' early research focused on the metabolism of carbohydrates, particularly glycogen. They discovered the enzyme phosphorylase, which plays a crucial role in the breakdown of glycogen into glucose. This groundbreaking work laid the foundation for our understanding of how the body stores and uses energy.
In 1928, the Coris moved to Washington University in St. Louis, where they continued their collaborative research. Gerty became an assistant professor of biochemistry, and in 1943, she became the first woman to be appointed full professor of biochemistry at Washington University.
One of the most significant achievements of the Coris' research was the identification of the Cori cycle, a crucial metabolic pathway in the body. The Cori cycle describes how the body converts lactic acid produced during muscle activity into glucose, which can then be used as an energy source. This work had profound implications for our understanding of energy metabolism and the adaptation of the body to exercise.
For their groundbreaking research, Gerty Cori, along with her husband Carl, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1947. The Coris' work laid the foundation for advances in biochemistry and our understanding of metabolic diseases.
Despite her significant contributions to science, Gerty Cori faced challenges as a woman in a male-dominated field. She often encountered gender-based discrimination and struggled to secure research positions that matched her qualifications. However, her determination and passion for science prevailed, and she became a role model for future generations of women in science.
Tragically, Gerty Cori's career was cut short when she was diagnosed with myelosclerosis, a rare blood disease. She passed away on October 26, 1957, at the age of 61. Her legacy, however, lives on, as her pioneering work paved the way for future generations of scientists and contributed significantly to our understanding of biochemistry and metabolism.
