In 1941, during World War II, the first jet-powered aircraft, the Gloster E.28/ 39, took flight, powered by Whittle's engine. The successful flight demonstrated the potential of jet propulsion and laid the foundation for the development of jet aircraft.
Whittle's contributions to aviation didn't end with the war. After the conflict, he continued to work on jet engine development and became a prominent figure in the aeronautical community. In 1948, he received a knighthood for his pioneering work.
