Biography
Edith Clarke was a pioneering electrical engineer and the first female electrical engineer in the United States. Born on February 10, 1883, in Howard County, Maryland, she grew up in a time when women faced significant challenges in pursuing careers in science and engineering. After completing her studies at MIT, Clarke worked as a "human computer" at the U.S. Bureau of Standards, where her mathematical skills were put to use in solving complex engineering problems. In 1921, she joined General Electric (GE) as a supervisor in the Turbine Engineering Department. Clarke's work at GE focused on power system analysis, and she developed a graphical method for solving power transmission line equations. This innovation became known as the Clarke Calculator and was a valuable tool in the design and analysis of power systems.
