1876 - Centennial Fourth Clambake

News
Plainfield.

About one hundred an fifty of the patriotic citizens of Plainfield celebrated the centennial Fourth by a clambake at the old Bradford farm on Stone hill. Much additional pleasure was lent to the occasion by the performances of the Plainfield cornet band, which played ery creditably and looked very handsome in its new uniform. Among those present was Mr. Hopkins, who, although he could not quite remember any previous centennial, was, nevertheless, able to give a vigorous illustration of the method in which he handled teh drumsticks in the war of 1812. Altogther those present enjoyed themselves greatly, and they feel that much of the success of the affair is due to the hospitality of Mr. Warren Wilkinson.

Another correspondent writes: Many bitter words have been said against the "Plainfield cornet band," because they gave somewhat of a cold shoulder to the idea of maching at the head of a company of "horribles," and furnishing music therefor. But it is positively untrue that they refused to do so. On the first vote it resulted in a tie, so announced, though some in the room knew it stood one in favor of going then. A mistake being made in counting, not intentional. On a new vote, after a few moments of consideration, a unanimous vote was taken to go, but they then found, after not a few hard words had been said against them, that a sufficient number to form a company of horribles could not be raised so as to make a creditable display. It was a suspicion of this tha led several members to vote against going at first. Don't be hard on the "boys," for they showed good sense in their action on the matter, and those who were disappointed at not seeing the "horribles" on the Fourth, should know that the fault lies with those who failed to start with the matter sooner, and carry it forward with a better understanding of what was wanted to make it a success.
