![]()
Patrick F. McCabe, formerly station agent at Bolton, who is under suspicion of attempting to wreck the New England States Limited the evening of January 26, has again mysteriously disappeared. There is a rumour, however, that he is on his way back to this city. It will be remembered that McCabe skipped from this city Wednesday evening going to St. Armand, Que., in James E. Handleys hack. Last night Duputy Sheriff Charles Jacques was left to watch McCabe, but during the night McCabe was spirited away, and his whereabouts are unknown, although Deputy Sheriff Jacques professes to know where McCabe is at present. Mr. Jacques returned to this city this forenoon. Sheriff E. H. Horton returned to Burlington last night, but went back to Canada this morning.
Z. Cornell, of Bedford, que., has been engaged by McCabe as his attorney and informed a representatie of The Messenger by telephone to-day that he had advised the man to return and face the charges against him, which he thinks he can do successfully. Mr. Cornell said that he considered McCabe a much wronged man. He declined to say whether he knew that McCabe had actuallly started back.
McCabe had the presumption to ask C. F. Soule, superintendent of the Central Vermont Railway Co., by telephone last evening for a position in some station on the Central Vermont railway in Canada. He also asked fro a statement of the amount due the company on his account as station agent at Bolton. Mr. Soule replied that he could not state the amount as the accounts had not yet been checked. When asked where he would be McCabe replied that he would be in St. Armand for some time, or until the accounts were settled. It is reported that McCabe deposited with the agent at St. Armand $65.37 to balance his account with the Central Vermont Railway Co.
A. L. Sherman, of Burlington, state's attorney for Chittenden county, went to St. Johns, Que., on the mail train last evening to try to have the Canadian officials issue a warrant for McCabe's arrest and detention until extradition papers could be procured.
It is believe that McCabe was taken from St. Armand by Mr. Hanley, the hackman who took him from this city to St. Armand.
