Pierre BLANCHET
Biography

BLANCHETTE - diminutive of BLANC, nickname given to someone with white hair, pale blond. Pierre Blanchet, son of Noël Blanchet and Madeleine Valet was born in Saint-Omer-de-Rosières, now Rosières-en-Santerre, in the Somme region of Picardy. It is believed that he was a weaver, like many of his fellow citizens at the time. Pierre Blanchet would have arrived in New France in 1665, as an engaged. On August 27, 1665, we therefore believe that Pierre Blanchet was working as a hired servant for Simon Lefebvre, Sieur Anger (and not Auger), completing his 36 regulatory months before being able to set up on his own as a resident. On Sunday, October 13, 1669, at Jacques de la Roe, a carpenter in Quebec, Pierre Blanchet signed a marriage contract with Marie Fournier, aged 14, eldest daughter of Guillaume Fournier, lord of St-Joseph, future baron of Îlets . The religious wedding took place on February 16, 1670 at the Cathedral of Quebec. Through her mother, Françoise Hébert, she was the great-granddaughter of Louis Hébert, recognized as the first Canadian settler. From the Blanchet-Fournier marriage were born at least 16 children, 12 boys and 4 girls. Two years later, on October 13, 1671, he obtained a concession near the mouth of the Rivière-du-Sud at a place first called Pointe-à-la-Caille, later St-Thomas-de- Montmagny. This is where Pierre and Marie will raise part of their family, several of whose children died at an early age. However, three of his sons, Pierre-Alphonse, Louis and Jean, left descendants from which nearly all the Blanchets and Blanchettes in America are descended. Pierre Blanchet bequeathed his land of Pointe-à-la-Caille to his children and came to settle in St-Pierre-de-la-Rivière-du-sud. Shortly before his death, he ceded a portion of land for the first church, the presbytery and the cemetery. It is in his honor that his name was given to the parish. The religious buildings therefore ended up on the ancestral land until 1785, when they were moved to the other side of the river.
