Biography

PARANT/ PARENT - From the Old French 'paren' which means father, a nickname to distinguish the father from a son of the same first name. Or, implicitly disappeared which means 'father of'. 1) Pierre Parent was born around 1610 in Mortagne-sur-Gironde in Saintonge, France. Son of André Parent and Marie Coudré, he married Jeanne Badeau (15), daughter of Jacques Badeau and Anne Ardouin, on February 9, 1654 in Beauport. From their union were born 18 children. He arrived in the country around 1652, and settled on the Beaupré coast, then in Quebec. He was a butcher and operated a butchery in Quebec from 1662. In 1667, he owned 3 horned animals and 15 arpents of land. In 1681, he owned 4 rifles, 1 pistol, 18 cattle, 24 sheep, and 100 acres of land. He has several servants at home. He died on August 5, 1698 in Beauport. 2) Gabriel-Antoine Parant was born on November 7, 1723 in Mesnil-Gilbert, Manche, France. Son of Jean Parant and Jeanne Jardin, he married Marguerite Boucher, widow of Pierre Roy-Desjardins, on June 10, 1754 in St-Louis de Kamouraska. Marguerite has 3 daughters from her first marriage. From her union with Gabriel, 5 children were born. They live in St-Louis de Kamouraska. He is said to be a farmer, a mason, and serving in the militia if need be. He died and was buried on April 6, 1777 in St-Louis de Kamouraska. His widow died on November 27, 1806, and was buried at his side the following day.
