( March 17, 1939 - December 14, 2017 )

Herbert Helle, age 78 of Nicollet died Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 18, 2017, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nicollet. Pastor Dan Witte will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery where the Nicollet Honor Guard will be providing full military honors.

Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday, December 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Nicollet and continue from 10 – 11 a.m. on Monday at the church.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Arlene Helle, of Nicollet; daughters; Renita (Dale) Lange of Nicollet, Beverly (Alpay) Onder of Novi, Michigan; son, Duane (Alyssa) Helle of New Ulm; grandchildren, Brady and Owen Onder, Meredith and Charlotte Helle; sisters, Esther Augusto of Georgia, Dora (Andy) Wiegers of Ward Springs; brothers, Donald (Naomi) Helle of Monticello, Florida, Robert (Joanne) Helle of Clarissa, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Eugene Helle.

Herbert Fredrick Helle was born on March 17, 1939 in Gaylord to Edwin and Clara (Pautsch) Helle. He graduated from Gaylord Public High School in 1957. Herb enlisted in the United States Army and served a few years, including a tour in Korea. After being medically discharged, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Arlene Johnson, on June 26, 1965 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Nicollet. After his military career, Herb worked at George Messner’s for many years, followed by Myles Lorentz Construction, and eventually at Grain Commerce as a semi-truck driver, where he retired. Many wonderful memories were made while serving as a lifetime member of Nicollet Legion Post 510, with the Nicollet Honor Guard, and all the time spent with his family and friends. He also enjoyed doing puzzles, playing cards and games, and spending time with his grandkids. He will be dearly missed.
