1913 - Traveling Man Has Disappeared - Was Last Heard Of On Oct 28 - Worked For Local Paper Co.

Made Trips All Right Until Latter Part Of October and Since Then Nothing Has Been Heard Of Him

Where is Sherman S. Salibury of Auburn? His wife doesn't know, the Black River Paper Co. of this city and George Irish of Rochester, for whom he traveled do not know, and the police do not know. There are several people who would like to know and search is now being conducted by the police of Auburn, where he resided and of Malone, where he was last seen. It is not believed that Salisbury is dead, but he mysteriously dropped out of sight about two months ago and has not been heard from since.

Salisbury who traveled for George Irish of Rochester, a dealer in paper and printers' supplies, came to this city comparatively recently, armed with good references and wanted to represent the Black River Paper Co. He was hired by the manager, John Hyde, the controlling factor in the company, and it is said that he made three trips over his territory all right, but that on the fourth trip he got lost and nothing has been heard from him since.

At the office of the company in this city little could be learned concerning him today, except that he was gone, and no one seemed to know where he was. Asked if he had got away with any of the company's money, it was said that he did not have much, if any, of it. There is apparently an air of mystery concerning the man, and when his employers are questioned concerning his character and habits, about the only answer received is a smile.

Chief of Police Robarge of Malone on Monday received a communication from Chief Bell of Auburn asking information as to the whereabouts of Salisbury. According to the communication, on Oct. 28, Mrs. Salsibury, in Auburn, received a telegram from her husband, who was then in Malone, stating that he would arrive home Oct. 30. He did not arrive and nothing has been heard from him since by either his family or anyone else. An investigation in Malone disclosed the fact that Salisbury was registered at the Smith House on Oct. 28 and the Howard House on Oct. 31. It is claimed that he declared his intention of going to Fort Covington, after leaving Malone.

Salisbury was about 42 years of age, was five feet 11 inches tall and weighted about 190? Pounds. He had a flat? Nose and features, and wore a stubby black mustache.
