1914 - Salisbury's Mind Is Unbalanced? His Friends Come To That Conclusion - Police Join In The Search

Photograph of the man who disappeared so mysteriously is sent to Franklin County

A search has been begun for Sherman S. Salisbury the traveling representative of the Black River Paper & Manufacturing Company of this city, who disappeared at Malone on Oct 28, and it is probable that he will be placed under arrest within a few days on the charge of petit larceny or some minor offense.

John M. Hyde, who owns the controlling stock in the local concern, has within the past few days, it is claimed, received information which leads him to believe that Salisbury is alive and working in a lumber camp near Tupper Lake. The matter was placed in the hands of the local police several weeks ago and Tuesday night a photograph of Salisbury was procured and placed in the hands of Franklin county authorities who, armed with the proper papers, will attempt the arrest of the man.

At Tupper Lake, it is said the sample case used by Salisbury was found and in it were letters from Mrs. Salisbury which her husband had received two and three weeks before he disappeared yet which he had not opened. He continued to write and telegraph to her up to two days before he disappeared. Also in the case was a memorandum of the amounts collected and those amounts tallied with the collections reported by customers to the local company. It is believed that Salisbury is mentally unbalanced. One of the several checks which he collected and which were lost with his disappearance has since been endorsed and cashed. Whether the endorsement was forged by Salisbury is unknown.
