Charles J. Simonelli, 78, city native

Charles J. Simonelli, 78, of 59 Kellie Drive, Pittsfield, formerly of Greenway Street, Pittsfield, died Thursday, Oct 31, 1996, at his home. Born in North Adams on Jan. 11, 1918, he was son of Ercoli and Lucia (Marino) Simonelli. He was educated in the local schools and attended Drury High School. Mr. Simonelli retired in 1983 at the deputy superintendent of the Berkshire County House of Correction after serving 35 years with the sheriffs department A communicant of St Marks Church, Pittsfield, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. The recipient of two Purple Hearts for wounds received, he was shot down and became a prisoner of war for 10 months. 4 Held prisoner at Stalag Barth in Germany, he was liberated by the allies on May 1, 1945. He was a past commander of the VFW Post 448 and was a charter and life member of the post A past venerable of the Mazzini Lodge of the Order of the Son sof Italy, he was a past president of the West Little League and a former member of the Pittsfield Babe Ruth League Board. His wife, the framer Evelyn R. Fraley, whom he married March 2, 1946, died Nov. 24, 1992. He is survived by two sons, Anthony J. Simonelli, with whom he lived, and Charles A. Simonelli of Pittsfield; a sister, Mary T. Crandall of North Adams, and four grandchildren. The funeral services will be Saturday, 8:15 a.m., from the Devanny-Condron Funeral Home, Pittsfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St Marks Church, Pittsfield. Burial will follow in St. Josephs Cemetery, Pjttsfield. Calling hours at the funeral home are today, 24 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Lee VNA or to Elder Services in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, Mass. 01201.
