1914 - Foul Play Feared - Sherman S. Salisbury Missing Over Two Months - Search is Unavailing - And Belief Is Growing Here And In Watertown That He Is Dead

Dispatches from Watertown announce that despite as systematic search for Sherman S. Salisbury of this city, who has been employed for some time as a traveling salesman for the Black River Paper & Manufacturing Company of Watertown, no trace of him has been found. The search has been in progress for about two months.

Salisbury disappeared mysteriously from Malone on October 28. Contrary to the first belief of his employers that he had absconded, there is a growing belief that he is dead and that is the belief of his wife and family in this city.

The Watertown dispatch says:

At the time that Salisbury disappeared he had $200 in money and about $700 in checks belonging to the local concern for which he traveled. After nothing had been heard from him for two weeks, John M. Hyde of this city, the controlling factor in the Black River Paper & Manufacturing Company, went over the route last covered by Salisbury and succeeded in invalidating the checks which Salisbury had collected. He also conducted a search for him, but was unable to find any trace of the man. Several weeks later information was received that Salisbury was working under another name for the Emporium Lumber Company at Tupper Lake, but this information proved false under investigation.

Various theories have been entertained by Mr. Hyde that Salisbury was demented and went to parts unknown; that while suffering from a disordered mind, he took his own life and that upon visiting some of his Adirondack villages and displaying a big roll of checks, he was foully dealt with by woodsmen and his body made away with.

That the man is dead is now believed by his wife, who, through Chief of Police Bell of Auburn, attempted to locate her husband. He had been in the habit of writing her every day when away from home and on October 28 sent her a telegram stating that he would be home on October 30. That was the last ever heard from him.
