John C. Woodward II

Air Force Colonel

John C. Woodward II, 76, a retired Air Force colonel and electrical engineer, died Nov. 9 at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va. He had Alzheimer's disease.

Col. Woodward lived in the Washington area on and off from 1952 to 1986, when he moved from McLean to Shepherdstown, W.Va.

He was a native of Atlanta who attended the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Maryland.

He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II and in the Air Force during the Korean War and in Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

He also was assigned to the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and to NATO.

His honors included a Defense Commendation Medal and Legion of Merit.

After he retired in 1973, he was executive director of the Radio Technical Communications Association.

He was a member of an electronic equipment organization, the Capital Heath Users Group, and a ham radio organization, the Military Affiliate Relay Service. He also belonged to the C&O Canal Association.

His first wife, Gertrude Day Woodward, died in 1979.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, M.E. "Emmie" Shreve Johns Woodward of Shepherdstown; four children from his first marriage, Mary O'Donnell of Clifton, Jack Woodward of San Jose, Briggs Woodward of Marietta, Ga., and Catherine Meuris of Waterloo, Belgium; three stepsons, Michael Johns of Arlington, David Johns of Charles Town, W.Va., and Evan Johns of Vancouver, B.C.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
