John BAKER - Bio
"Biography* Records show that he indentured himself as a grocer on 9 April, 1616...for a 12 year stint as an apprentice. He was made a citizen of Norwich, England on 15 August, 1628. Came to Boston in 1637, aboard the "Rose" of Yarmouth, England. W.S. Appleton's "Ancestry of Priscilla Baker" contains a copy of his examination before embarking. It reads: April 8th 1637. The examination of John Baker borne in Norwich in Norffolcke, Grocar aged 39 years, and Elizabeth his wife aged 31 yeares with 3 Children, Elizabeth, John and Thomas, and 4 Sarvants, Marey Alxarson, aged 24 yeares, Anne Alxarson, aged 20 yeares, Bridgett Boulle aged 32 yeares and Samuell Arres aged 14 yeares ar all desiroues to goe for Charles Towne in New England ther to inhabitt and remaine. He came originally to Charleston, but settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts and later in Topsfield. His sons, John and Thomas were "wild" and frequently in trouble with the law. They were once found guilty of aiding an imprisoned "horse thief" to escape from jail and were sentenced to "be severely whipt wth tenn stripes apeece forthuith, & be bound to their good behaviour wth sureties of twenty pounds apeece till the next county Court at Ipsuich". The sentence was suspended and, eventually, the fine reduced.
John Baker was alive as late as 2 March 1680, so lived to be at least 82 years old. Marriage* Groom Bride: Elizabeth ?
