CENTRAL DISTRICT COURT, UTLEY, J. - WEDNESDAY, FEB. 26
Charles T. Aldrich Jr., the Sutton mill superintendent who shot and seriously wounded Albert Baker last Saturday, was arraigned, charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
State Detective Peleg F. Murray, who has been at work upon the case for the past few days, informed the court that he had called upon Baker, the victim of the shooting, in company with his attending physician, Tuesday afternoon. He found him in a critical condition, and the doctor had advised that he would not be able to appear in court for at least 10 days, even if he was by that time. The district attorney had accordingly requested him to ask for a continuance of at least 10 days. The district attorney also desired, in view of the critical condition of Baker, that the bail should be increased to $2000.
Thomas l. Brown Esq. of Millbury who appeared as counsel for Aldrich, strenuously to any increase in bail, urging that the condition of Baker was being represented as far more serious than it really was. He said that he had taken especial pains to investigate the matter, and he was satisfied that the reports as to Baker’s injuries which had been given out were greatly exaggerated.
The court said that in the absence of any specific knowledge as to baker’s condition, he did not see how he could well disregard the request of the district attorney. The case was then ordered continued until Tuesday, March 10, Aldrich being held in the sum of $2000 for appearance at that time.
