1894 - November 1 - DEATH OF MERCIER. The Ex-Premier of the Province of Quebec Passes Away.
MONTREAL, Oct. 31. - Honore Mercier, ex-premier of Quebec, died yesterday morning at 9 o'clock. The end had been expected any time during the preceding twenty-four hours and hope of recovery had been given up weeks ago. In fact from the moment that he first felt seriously ill on the 14th of August last it had been felt that he lay on his death bed. Mr. Mercier had been suffering from a complication of diseases for years past, diabetis predominating. After his defeat at the general election of March, 1893, his friends expressed the opinion that he had only six months to live, but by dint of adopting abstemious habits of living he managed to prolong his life.
Honore Mercier was born at St. Athanase, Que., in 1840; was educated at the College of the Jesuit Fathers in Montreal; studied for the bar and began to practice at St. Hyacinthe in 1863. He edited the St. Hyacinthe Courier for a time, but resigned to enter politics. He attempted to make Quebec an independent province for the French and for Rome. In 1872 he was elected to represent Rouville in the house of commons, where he made a deep impression. In 1886 he was chosen premier of Quebec and became famous as an extreme nationalist. He was created a Count of the Holy Roman Empire, when Pope Leo invited him to Rome, but on his return to Canada he was confronted by charges of corruption in office, was deposed from the premiership and has since lived a retired life in Montreal.
