On November 12, 1927, the Holland Tunnel made history by opening as the first vehicular tunnel under the Hudson River, connecting Jersey City, New Jersey, with Lower Manhattan in New York City. Named after Clifford Milburn Holland, the engineer who designed it but sadly passed away before its completion, the tunnel represented a monumental engineering achievement of its time.
